It also comes with the feature of smart mapping which uses multiple sensors to help it identify the areas in your home that need attention and create a cleaning path around them. This technology is very efficient in navigating around toys that have been left on the floor, or furniture legs that are sticking out from underneath things. Roomba also has a sensor that will snap Roomba back to reality when it starts to move away from its initial location.

iRobot has also added a new set of rollers under the Roomba's bottom, which don't have bristles and therefore tend to resist tangles better than previous models. These are also a little higher than the older rollers and can better fit under low couches and beds, and they're designed to let this model move more easily across different flooring types.

The Roomba 980 is distinguished from other models of high-end quality due to its latest dirt detection feature that makes use of cameras to detect dirt embedded. This is a great improvement over the previous version, which relied on the sensor-driven pseudorandom coverage method to bounce around the room and clean at least three times from different angles.

The Roomba 980 performed well in our tests on both carpets and hard floors. Its score on the low pile carpet was excellent and it scored a good score on mid pile, too. It did a decent job of picking up pet hair, but it had a difficult time with very long and thick pet fur that was clumped together.

Despite these small shortcomings, the Roomba 980 remains one of our most efficient robots, and it's even nearly as expensive as some of the other top-of-the-line models on this list. It comes with many of the features you'd expect from a top model but does not have all the fancy apps or home integration you'd get from other top contenders.

The iRobot Roomba can be set up in a matter of minutes and is ready to use as soon as you are ready to. After you have removed the pull tab for the battery and the yellow bin insert from the undercarriage, all you have to connect it to its Home Base docking station or a wall socket, press its large "Clean" button, and let it get to work. It will return to the dock when it has run out of battery or is full of debris. There are also indicators on top that show when the bin is empty, when it is in need of recharging or when it loses its Wi-Fi.
